Ahead of the start of Betfred World Matchplay, the UK operator spoke to Michael van Gerwen, who emphasised just how excited he is to get crowds back at the darts.

Whilst the tournament returned on Saturday, it welcomes back capacity crowds this evening as restrictions in the UK are lifted.

The Dutchman was honest in his assessment that in recent years he has ‘underperformed’ at the tournament, however, vowed he has nothing to prove as he looks to challenge for the crown this year.

He also revealed that ahead of the tournament his preparation has been going well and he is working hard to ensure he’s vying for top honours this year.

The world number three collides with Australian, Damon Heta, on Monday night, amid a backdrop that is set to be special with the returning of fans.
